MCBs, RCCBs & RCBOs

The devices that disconnect a circuit before it hurts someone or starts a fire. Miniature circuit breakers handle overload and short circuit; residual current devices detect the small leakage currents that flow through a person; RCBOs combine both in one device. We stock Siemens Betagard and Hager across breaking capacities from 6 kA to 15 kA, in B, C, D, K and Z tripping curves.

Common questions

What is the difference between an MCB and an RCCB?
An MCB protects the wiring from overload and short circuit, meaning too much current. An RCCB protects people from electric shock by detecting current leaking to earth, typically at 30 mA. They do different jobs, so most installations need both.
Which MCB curve should I use: B, C or D?
B curve trips at 3–5 times rated current, for resistive loads like lighting and heaters. C curve trips at 5–10 times, the general-purpose choice for mixed domestic and commercial circuits. D curve trips at 10–20 times, for motors and transformers with high inrush.
What sensitivity of RCCB do I need?
30 mA for personal protection on socket and lighting circuits - this is the level that protects against electric shock. 100 mA or 300 mA is used for fire protection on incoming or sub-main circuits, where nuisance tripping from normal leakage would otherwise be a problem.
What is an AFDD and do I need one?
An arc fault detection device spots the arcing in damaged or loose wiring that causes electrical fires but does not draw enough current to trip an MCB. It is not yet mandatory in India, but is worth specifying in hospitals, schools, hotels and data centres.
