Surge Protection

Surge protective devices divert the energy of a lightning strike or a switching transient to earth before it reaches equipment. Type 1 goes at the incoming panel of a building with a lightning protection system, Type 2 at distribution boards, Type 3 close to sensitive equipment. Photovoltaic-specific devices protect the DC side of a solar installation. We supply Siemens, Hager and the full OBO Bettermann range, including the Type 1+2 LightningController for busbar mounting at the main panel.

Common questions

Do I need Type 1 or Type 2 surge protection?
Type 1 is required where the building has an external lightning protection system, because it must handle a direct strike's partial current. Type 2 is for distribution boards downstream, or at the incomer of a building with no lightning protection system in an area of low strike risk.
Does an SPD replace an RCCB?
No. They protect against completely different things. An SPD protects equipment from overvoltage transients lasting microseconds. An RCCB protects people from earth leakage current. An installation needs both, and the SPD must be coordinated with a backup fuse or MCB.
